How to Check Used RAM & How to Increase RAM Using HDD on Windows 10

🛑 How to Check Used & Empty RAM Slots on Windows 10

A PC, whether it’s a desktop or a laptop, has a motherboard and that motherboard determines what physical components i.e., hardware can be installed on the PC. Think of it as a power board that you can connect multiple appliances to. If your power board only has three spots, you can only connect three appliances to it. With a motherboard, there are dedicated spots i.e., slots for the various hardware components that you can connect. RAM slots are one common example. When you buy (or build) a PC, some or all of the RAM slots may be used. You can check empty RAM slots by physically opening up your PC, or if you’re running Windows 10, you can check from the Task Manager.

Due to memory demanding software like Google Chrome, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, etc., we start to feel the need for the extra RAM. Installing RAM on the motherboard is easy, however, what if your motherboard doesn’t have any extra slot left for RAM? So, if you are planning to upgrade your computer, then you need to know the number of RAM slots available on the motherboard.

By understanding the number of RAM slots available on the motherboard, you can quickly determine whether you can add more RAM sticks or purchase a new motherboard. Although you can open your computer case or check your documentation to verify the total RAM slots, you can also confirm the total number of slots supported on your motherboard via Task Manager.

⚜ lt’s worth noting that there are plenty of third-party tools available to check the RAM slots, but most of those software contains malware that can damage your system files. So, let’s check the steps to quickly find out if your PC has any available memory slots left.
🔹Step 1: First of all, open the Start Menu and search for Task Manager.
🔹Step 2: Open Task Manager from the List. You can also open Task Manager By Pressing CTRL + ALT + Delete.
🔹Step 3: Now on the Task Manager, you need to move to the ‘Performance’ tab.
🔹Step 4: Now under the Performance tab, select ‘Memory’
🔹Step 5: Now on the right-hand side panel, check the ‘Slots Used’. On my computer, its showing 1/2. That means I can add an extra memory stick.
✅ That’s it, you are done! This is how you can quickly determine memory slots available on the Motherboard on Windows 10

How to Increase RAM In Windows PC Using HDD Space

Want to use your hard drive as RAM?

If you are using an old computer with less than 4 GB of RAM, you probably need to supercharge your PC by setting up virtual memory in Windows using your HDD.

A few years ago, I had an old Windows computer with only 2 GB of RAM. This sucked, to be honest. However, I was able to still run my ordinary tasks pretty well. 🙁

But when it came to multitasking, it was horrible. But using virtual memory allocation in Windows, I was able to boost my performance a bit more. This guide is for all Windows users.

So, the more will be the RAM, the better will be the performance and stability. If you can’t afford RAM, then you can always increase the Virtual memory of your computer.
🔹 Step 1: First of all, in your windows PC, navigate to My Computer and there you need to right-click on the empty screen there and select properties.
🔹 Step 2: Now on the left panel, you need to select the option Advanced Settings.
🔹 Step 3: Now under the performance tab, click on the Settings option and you will see another dialog box.
🔹 Step 4: Now click on the advanced section and there under Virtual memory simply click on Change option.
🔹 Step 5: Now untick on the option Automatic Manage Paging and then choose the drive whose paging memory you want to alter. Simply define the Custom Size there and simply click on set and then ok option.
✅ That’s it, you are done! Now you can feel the difference in performance in your Windows PC.
